KELLY STRAYHORN THEATER

A world premiere performance of improvography & light
directed by Pearlann Porter & John Lambert
with original score by PJ Roduta

We proudly present the world premiere of NOW:PLAYING, a full length dance work lit entirely through an original approach to theatrical lighting. By utilizing video projected fields of moving light aimed across the stage from the sides, this hour-long performance “paints the music onto the movement” with projected light only encountered by illuminated bodies in the dark. The dance creates illusions out of the physical forms in motion, who seemingly appear from nowhere and disappear back into darkness.

NOW:PLAYING is our definition of when and how improvisation happens. It is the performers who literally press ‘Play’ in unison to initiate the precisely timed video projection they will play in this theatrical announcement of our first feature length performance to occur on a proscenium stage in our fifteen-year history!

...if The Pillow Project, after all these years, is going to finally have a performance in an actual theater, it’s our intention to deconstruct and reinvent the idea of how you expect to see something in a theater!

Through the our unique choreographic direction, we play in this present-tense, non-fictional Postmodern-Jazz.
